Growing your Online Content

We are all in the same boat in the online world. Like strict parents, the biggest search engines in the world have final say over where websites rank in the SERP’s. And just like obedient children (we try), we need to keep these search engines happy and proud of our efforts. One of the best ways to do this is to constantly create user friendly, search engine optimised content on a regular basis.

If Google were your father and you came home from school and told him you had received an A+ for mathematics, your initial thought would be that he would be ecstatic with your result. What you are not telling him is that you actually copied all your work from your best friend Peter. Google, like your Father, will eventually find out and penalise you for duplicate content and as in life, this will probably set you back and will be detrimental to what you are actually trying to achieve. So how do we keen search engines happy with good content?

Get Blogging

While most of your website pages will probably consist of static pages, creating a blog either on the same domain (ideal) or sub-domain, will keep your website fresh with new content. What to blog about? As long as it’s generally sticking with the theme of your website and it is inline with your brand… pretty much anything.

Add Value

While creating a blog is a great start to keeping search engines happy, you also want to keep customers informed and generate new leads. As the age-old saying goes, “If you haven’t got anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” Would you rather write 10 blog posts, for the sake of writing them, or write one epically informative, value-adding post with the possibility of going viral? A well thought out, unique and deeply informative post has the possibility of generating a lot of inbound links, social shares, leads and respect from the industry. Sound good?

Creating Ideas

At some point or another, the all too famous writers block will raise its ugly head. Luckily there are a few tricks to get through this:

  • Guest post- By inviting other industry professionals to write for your blog, you harness the power of a collective voice and it may even introduce a fresh perspective.
  • Interview- Everyone likes to know about the top professionals in their industry. Contact an industry leader with some well thought out questions. If they have the time and they feel your questions are personal, they are often happy to reply.
  • Use multimedia- Visual enhancements are like beautiful decorations, they make the cake pretty to the eye. Images, videos and infographics are a great way to power up your text. Use them sparingly and when they compliment the text beautifully. A well constructed infographic has huge potential to go viral.
  • Revisit the past- Often blog posts are written and then perhaps after a few comments and a couple of shares, they are forgotten. Revisiting your old posts and following up with updated information or expanding on what you already have can work wonders for your existing content, sparking it back to life.
  • Feature a top list- People love lists they can use to rank information. Creating a “Top 5” or “The best 10” is a great way to layout information as well as your own opinion. If the list is comprehensive and useful, many people may opt to bookmark it for future use.

Optimize

In the dense and complex world that is internet marketing, this is perhaps my most favourite word. Like the rest of your website, the blog can be optimized for search engines so that spiders and bots can crawl and index your site appropriately. What should you be focusing on? In a nutshell- keywords, titles, meta-descriptions, H1, 2, 3, 4 tags amongst a host of other “SEO tricks“. That’s where we come in. Our expertise in SEO copywriting will help you grow your online content, adding value and pleasing search engines as well as your audience.
